What is a Routine Flow?

A routine flow is a guided, step-by-step experience that walks you through your routine one item at a time. Instead of reading a static list and trying to remember where you are, the flow presents each step individually, lets you interact with it, and tracks your progress through the session.

It turns your routine from a reference document into an active execution tool.

How to Start a Routine Flow

From the Daily Task List (Dashboard)

The Routine widget on your Dashboard shows a daily task list of all your scheduled and in-progress routines. Tap any routine to start or continue its flow.

For scheduled routines, the task list shows them automatically on their scheduled days — just tap to begin. You can also tap the + button to start an ad-hoc session for any active routine.

From the Sidebar (iPad / Mac)

Active routines appear in the left sidebar. Tap the routine name, then tap Start Flow.

From Notifications

If you've set up routine notifications (see Notifications), tapping the notification opens the routine flow directly.

From a Widget (Home Screen)

If you have TradingPlan's home screen widget installed on your iPhone or iPad, tapping it can open your routine flow directly.

Working Through the Flow

The flow presents each step in sequence. Depending on the step type, you might:

  • Check it off — for simple confirmation steps
  • Add a note — for reflection or observation prompts
  • Use a timer — for timed steps (e.g. a 5-minute mindset review)
  • Mark it skipped — if a step isn't applicable on this session

Work through the phases in order. Each phase shows a progress indicator so you can see how far through you are.

Completing a Routine

When you've worked through all steps, the flow shows a completion screen. Tap End Session to log it to your Flow History.

A completed routine is a signal to yourself that you are prepared and operating according to your plan. That signal matters more than it sounds.

Removing a Routine from the Daily Task List

Tap the X button on any routine in the task list to remove it. What happens depends on the session state:

  • No progress (scheduled routine): You'll be asked whether to log it as skipped to Flow History or just remove it. This helps you track when you skip a scheduled routine.
  • Partial or full progress: You'll be asked whether to log the session to Flow History before removing it (Pro), or just delete it.
  • No progress (manual session): Removed immediately — there's nothing to log.

For scheduled routines, removing an entry dismisses it for the rest of the day. It will reappear at its scheduled time on the next scheduled day.

Flow History

Every completed or skipped routine flow can be recorded. Go to Flow History (accessible from the Trade Plan tab) to see:

  • Date and time of each session
  • Which routine was run
  • How many steps were completed vs total

Reviewing flow history over time helps you see your consistency and identify periods where your preparation started slipping. Skipped sessions (0 of N steps) are also recorded if you choose to log them, giving you visibility into days you missed.

If You're Interrupted Mid-Flow

If you close the app or switch away mid-flow, your progress is preserved. When you return, you can continue from where you left off.

Adjusting Your Routine After Running It

The first few times you run a routine, you'll often notice steps that feel unnecessary or steps that are missing. That's expected — routines improve through use.

Go back to Trade Plan → Routines, tap the routine, and edit it. Changes take effect the next time you run the flow.

Tips

Run the flow, don't just read the list. The act of actively working through each step — rather than just glancing at a static list — is what makes routines effective. The friction of the flow is a feature, not a bug.

Set a consistent time. Pre-market routines work best when they're done at the same time every day. Pair the flow with a fixed point in your morning — after coffee, before you open your charts.

Use the note fields honestly. If a step asks how you're feeling and the honest answer is "distracted and tired," write that. The note is for you. Knowing you wrote "8/10 focus" on the days you traded well, and "5/10" on the days you broke your rules, is valuable data.
